How to Insert the Resource Column in Microsoft Project
If you want to assign resources such as Mason Team, Electrician, Plumber, or Carpenter Team to tasks, follow these steps:
Step 1: Create Your Resource List
Go to:
View → Resource Sheet
Enter your resources:
| Resource Name | Type |
|---|---|
| Mason Team | Work |
| Electrician | Work |
| Plumber | Work |
| Carpenter Team | Work |
| Painter Team | Work |
Microsoft Project will now recognize these resources.
Step 2: Return to Gantt Chart
Go to:
View → Gantt Chart
Step 3: Insert the Resource Names Column
Right-click any column heading (such as Task Name or Duration).
Select Insert Column.
Type Resource Names.
Press Enter.
A new Resource Names column will appear.
Step 4: Assign Resources to Tasks
Click the cell under Resource Names and select from the dropdown list.
Example:
| Task Name | Duration | Resource Names |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation Work | 5 days | Mason Team |
| Electrical Rough-in | 3 days | Electrician |
| Plumbing Installation | 2 days | Plumber |
| Interior Painting | 4 days | Painter Team |
You can assign multiple resources:
| Resource Names |
|---|
| Mason Team, Electrician |
Alternative Method: Assign Resources
Select a task.
Go to Resource → Assign Resources.
Select the resource.
Click Assign.
This method is useful when assigning many resources to one task.
Best Practice for Construction Projects
For your construction schedules at 8AM, create standard resources such as:
Mason Team
Rebar Team
Formwork Team
Concrete Team
Electrician
Plumbing Team
Tile Team
Painting Team
Site Engineer
Site Supervisor
Procurement Officer
This makes resource planning, workload balancing, and resource leveling much easier later.
Important Tip
Do not type resource names directly into every task without first creating them in the Resource Sheet. Creating resources in the Resource Sheet ensures Microsoft Project can detect overloads and perform resource leveling correctly.
