What is "Maximum Units" in the Resource Sheet in Microsoft Project?
Maximum Units (%) in the Resource Sheet of Microsoft Project represents the availability of a resource for work in a project. It defines how much of a resource's total capacity is available to be assigned to tasks.
How Maximum Units Work
- If a resource is available full-time (e.g., a worker who works 8 hours per day), the Maximum Units should be 100%.
- If a resource is available only half the time (e.g., a part-time worker who works 4 hours per day), the Maximum Units should be 50%.
- If multiple resources share the same name (e.g., a team of 5 workers), you can set Maximum Units to 500% (indicating 5 full-time workers).
Example Use Cases
Full-Time Worker:
- John is available full-time → Maximum Units = 100%
- If assigned to a task for 8 hours, he works a full day.
Part-Time Worker:
- Sarah works half-time (4 hours per day) → Maximum Units = 50%
- If assigned to a task for 8 hours, it takes 2 days to complete.
Team of Workers:
- A team of 3 electricians → Maximum Units = 300%
- If assigned to an 8-hour task, all 3 electricians work together, completing 24 hours of work in total.
Where to Set Maximum Units?
- Go to Resource Sheet (View → Resource Sheet).
- In the "Max Units" column, enter the availability percentage.
Why It’s Important?
- Helps prevent over-allocation (assigning more work than a resource can handle).
- Ensures proper scheduling and workload balancing.
