How to Show WBS 0 in Microsoft Project

When creating a project schedule in Microsoft Project, the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) usually starts from 1. However, many project managers and construction planners prefer to display WBS 0 as the highest level representing the entire project.

What is WBS 0?

WBS 0 is the Project Summary Task.

It represents the whole project and automatically summarizes:

  • Total Project Duration

  • Total Work

  • Total Cost

  • Overall Start Date

  • Overall Finish Date

Example:

WBSTask Name
0SPH Building Construction Project
1Pre-Construction
1.1Site Survey
1.2Design Approval
2Substructure
2.1Excavation
2.2Foundation

In this example, WBS 0 is the complete project.

How to Show WBS 0

Method 1: Using the Format Tab

  1. Open your project.

  2. Go to Gantt Chart View.

  3. Click the Format tab.

  4. In the Show/Hide section, check Project Summary Task.

Microsoft Project will immediately display the Project Summary Task at the top of your schedule.

Method 2: Using Project Options

  1. Click File.

  2. Select Options.

  3. Choose Advanced.

  4. Scroll down to Display options for this project.

Why Use WBS 0?

1. Better Project Overview

WBS 0 provides a quick summary of the entire project.

You can instantly see:

  • Project Start Date

  • Project Finish Date

  • Total Duration

  • Total Cost

2. Easier Reporting

Many clients and management teams want to see the project summarized at the highest level.

WBS 0 provides a clean and professional overview.

3. Improved Schedule Organization

A structured WBS helps keep schedules organized and easier to understand.

Typical construction structure:

0. Project Name
    1. Pre-Construction
    2. Substructure
    3. Superstructure
    4. Architectural Works
    5. MEP Works
    6. External Works
    7. Testing & Commissioning
    8. Handover

Construction Scheduling Best Practice

For construction projects, always enable the Project Summary Task (WBS 0) before starting detailed scheduling.

This allows you to:

✅ Monitor the entire project from one line

✅ Track overall project duration

✅ Review total project cost

✅ Generate cleaner reports

✅ Improve communication with clients and management

Key Takeaway

WBS 0 = Project Summary Task

By enabling the Project Summary Task in Microsoft Project, you can view the entire project at the highest level, making planning, reporting, and schedule management much more effective. 🚀🏗️📊
